A RANGE OF PROFESSIONS

The professions practised in the port are extremely diverse (see the organisational chart) et certains and certain call for very specialised profiles, e.g. crane drivers, braziers, and hydrographic plotters... Vacant situations are first offered to members of the staff and then to outside persons, through small announcements, or through recourse to specialised recruitment cabinets.

THREE DISTINCT STATUTES

A Public Establishment belonging to the State, the Port of Bordeaux employs three distinct categories of staff :
  • a majority of the staff under private law, governed by the Common Collective Convention of Port Authorities and Maritime Chambers of Commerce and Industry,
  • registered seafarers (sailors and Officers), who come under the statutes applicable to the Merchant Navy
  • civil servants, who are not numerous, detached from their original administrations for a limited period.
The full staff strength is around 500.

Dockworkers, contrary to what is normally thought, are not members of the Port Authority’s staff.

TRAINING

Only requests formulated within the framework of Educational obligatory training can be considered.
Where places are available and when it is possible to give trainees an assignment that corresponds to their expectations, leach trainee is attached to a « tutor » who is responsible for ensuring the trainees temporary integration. Trainees do not receive a salary, whatever their level.
The Port of Bordeaux, in particular, welcomes trainees who are being educated in the following professions :
  • - students preparing professional diplomas (CAP/BEP/ PRO/ BTS) in technical fields such as brazing, soldering, mechanics, electricity, electronics, electro-techniques, maintenance

  • - students preparing higher study diplomas (above or equal to A level + 2) in the fields of computer techniques or civil engineering.
Training periods are defined within a convention, signed by the trainee, the authority and the educational establishment, which determines the rights and duties of the three parities and specifies in particular the coverage of the trainee with regard to accidents at work and civil liability.
