Definition of autonomy
An autonomous port is a public establishment belonging to the State, which ensures both a public service mission
(in particular the development, maintenance and policing of Port facilities and access) and an industrial and commercial activity that notably
concerns port handling equipment. It is endowed with a civil personality and with financial autonomy :
- it is placed under the aegis of the Ministry of Equipment, Transport
and Housing, Tourism and Sea
(Direction of Maritime Transport, Ports and Coastlines)
- it is subject to economic and financial auditing by the State

Missions of the Autonomous Port
The autonomous port deputises for the State
for the management of the port or ports located within its boundaries.
It is responsible for :
- ensuring the operation, maintenance and policing of the port
zone(s).
- carrying out improvement works, renovations or extensions to
port facilities.
- managing port real-estate.
- managing handling equipment, sections storage and ship repairs.
